Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays: a time of gathering of the family when our energy focuses on gratitude and releases the mundane stresses and strife of daily life for at least a day. When I think about the original pilgrims, refugees from religious and political persecution in their home country, celebrating not just the possibility of surviving the coming winter, the help and welcome given them, but also the possibility of creating a new life unbound by the inflexibility of the old world, I sense the uniqueness of this country. This unique character of possibility, that the old rules don’t have to bind us, that we can envision and create a new and different and better social structure, a new and better way of relating to each other; this potential for change, for creating a new life, permeates our culture and informs our outlook and behavior. I think it is what makes this country great.
As you celebrate today and reflect on those things for which you are grateful, I invite you to also think about this potential for doing things in a new way; for staying in your center even in the face of buffeting winds of anxiety from the outside world; for staying present with your family and friends, seeing them as they are rather than as you expect them to be; to allow for the creative change and healing of old wounds; to allow a world of beneficial possibility to unfold and embrace us all.
Wishing you a wonderful and happy Thanksgiving!
