I hope this letter finds you enjoying this fleeting autumn and welcoming the first taste of winter. The crispness of the nights and the lovely warmth of the days energize and focus us as we prepare for winter and this time of nesting and internalization.
Welcome to my new newsletter, blog, and website, CorinneChaves.com, which focus on tools for YOUR energetic, physical, mental and spiritual health. Here you can find tools, techniques and support as you take action to improve the quality of your body, mind and spirit.
In celebration of this launch, I will be hosting a special meditation at 10am on Sunday, November 24th to celebrate the season and the renewal of focus and energy. The meditation will be at my home in Clarkston, Georgia. Please RSVP and I will send directions!
The Path to Health Begins with Essential Energy
Winter is Here
According to the Lunar Calendar, the winter season began on November 3rd. Certainly in Atlanta we noted the crispness in the air as the wind shifted to the North and the nights became cooler and drier. Winter is all about focusing internally. Nurturing the body and spirit from within becomes the new center of attention. During the winter season we naturally adapt our behaviors such as diet, sleep, exercise and meditation cycles to accommodate the change in the weather and solar and lunar cycles. As in nature, winter is a time of consolidation, rest and regeneration of essential energy. It is natural to sleep more: rise later and go to bed earlier. Our diet shifts to warming and grounding foods. In wintertime we plan for the next project, the next year, the next cycle. Winter is a great time to establish a regular meditation practice, if you don’t already have one.
Meditative practices are the root of many of the world’s ancient spiritual traditions and are being recognized by western science and modern traditions as beneficial to health and longevity. Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism each have huge stores of physical and mental exercises that have been developed all with one purpose: to make it easier to meditate and achieve deep internal stillness. Taiji, Yoga, Qigong, chanting mantras, cultivation of concentration, vegetarian and sattvic diets all have a core purpose beyond improved health and longevity: to allow us to sit in meditation without distraction.
If you’ve ever tried to meditate you know that sitting without distraction can be hugely challenging. The good news is that it does become easier and that there are many, many techniques and tools for making it easier. The other good news is that benefits of meditation show up immediately, making it easier to choose to meditate.
Congee or rice porridge is a staple of the Chinese diet. Congee can be sweet or savory, and with different combinations of herbs, congee can generate healing energy and be a most nourishing soup. During winter we can add warming herbs such as cinnamon and clove or focus the healing quality of the congee to the kidneys and water phase by adding black rice, black sesame seeds or other kidney tonifying foods and spices. I hope you will enjoy this recipe for a nurturing and warming variation on a classic Chinese rice porridge:
Qigong, Taiji and Yoga are excellent winter exercises which support our essential energy. In winter, we want to focus on exercises that support and nurture the kidneys. A daily practice of 30 minutes to an hour keeps the body healthy and warm. Hard Qigong and Bone Stretching Qigong support the kidney health and internal fire. Keep the body moving! While winter is a time of consolidation, we don’t want to become static and generate stagnation in the body. (Coming soon: Hard Qi Gong and Bone Stretching Qi Gong workshops).
