I hope you stayed warm during this last deep chill. Tomorrow (Wednesday) is the last full moon of the Year of the Water Snake. This is a good day to meditate and engage the energy of the moon. Traditionally, the period between now and the end of the lunar year is all about cleaning and organizing; preparing for the Kitchen God’s report to heaven; and shopping and cooking for the two week celebration of the Lunar New Year which goes from lunar new year’s eve until the Lantern Festival. The Lantern Festival falls on the first full moon of the year which will be February 14th this year. January 31st marks the beginning of the Year of the Horse in its Wood phase. Mid Winter Home Cleaning
The Kitchen God visits with us on a regular basis and is responsible for making a once-a-year report back to heaven about the goings-on in the household. To support a good report, it is traditional to do a deep cleaning of the house and, especially, the kitchen in advance of this reporting period. This year the reporting day is January 23rd.
The Lunar New Year is known as the Spring Festival. It marks the midway point of winter in the solar calendar but marks the beginning of spring in the lunar calendar. It’s name is a reminder that even in the depths of the cold of winter, spring is on its way!
Ward Away the Blues
In support of health and happiness, keep meditating, keep moving with Qi Gong or Tai Chi and stay warm. If you find depression setting in after dreary days of rain and dark you may find that eating ocean fish such as salmon or cod brings almost immediate relief. If you are adverse to fresh fish, you can get good quality fish oil pills at the health food store. These are okay as a substitute for fresh fish.
Warm Those Feet
If you find you have trouble warming your hands and feet, give yourself the gift of a foot soak. I like to use as hot of water as I can stand. It doesn’t need any salts or other additives, although, if your skin is dry you can add a ½ cup of rice wine vinegar to the soaking water. Keep the water hot. I like to have a hot kettle of water in reach and as the soak water cools, I add hot water to keep it nice and toasty. After about 20 minutes, remove your feet, towel them dry and put on nice warm socks or get into bed. This soaking method brings warmth to the kidneys and can help keep your feet warm for most of the night.
I look forward to seeing you soon!
Best wishes for a wonderful Lunar New Year Festival!
